UKIPO to Discontinue Series Trademark Filings – Effective Autumn 2025

The UK Intellectual Property Office (UKIPO) has announced that the option to file series trademarks will be discontinued from Autumn 2025 as part of its Digital Transformation Programme.

Currently, applicants may file up to six variations of a mark in a single application if they differ only in immaterial elements. This option will soon be removed for new filings.

Effective Timeline

  • The new digital system launches in Autumn 2025.
  • Series mark filings will no longer be accepted once the system goes live.
  • Existing registrations remain valid and can continue to be renewed.

Background

Series trademark filings have historically allowed protection for similar marks with minor variations. However, the UK is now shifting toward simplification. In the LOGICA PLC case (O/068/03), the UKIPO reaffirmed that marks must be “essentially identical” to qualify as a series.

Comparison – UAE Practice

Unlike the UK, the UAE continues to recognise series marks under Article 9 of Federal Decree-Law No. 36 of 2021, offering flexibility for brand owners managing minor mark variations.

This change highlights diverging approaches in brand portfolio management between the UK and UAE markets.
