SWEDEN

Registration of trademarks Sweden is a party to both the European Union and the Madrid Protocol. Registration is required to acquire trademark protection. It can also be obtained by receiving enough public acknowledgement.

Requirements

A local agent must submit a trademark application to the Patent Office. All you need is an unregistered power of attorney. A domestic registration is not required for foreign candidates.

Renewal

In Sweden, the period of validity for registering a trademark is ten years, starting from the date of filing (for applications submitted after January 1, 2019) or the date of registration (for applications filed prior to December 31, 2018). Renewal payments for trademark applications submitted prior to December 31, 2018, must be paid no later than six months following the registration date, but no later than six months prior to the registration date.

For trademark applications submitted after January 1, 2019, renewal fees must be paid within six months of the application date, but not before. For consecutive ten-year periods, trademark registration may be renewed an infinite number of times.

Duration

In Sweden, a trademark registration is effective from the registration date for a period of ten years. Ten-year renewal periods are available for the registration.
